The College Internship Program is a non-paid position. 

Applicants must be in good academic standing to be considered.  

  • The program provides the opportunity to:

  • Gain exposure to the State’s legislative process

  • GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS

    • The combination of each intern’s expectations, interests, and assignment to the office produces a unique experience.  The College Internship Program provides a rare opportunity to work with a state legislator in the House of Representatives.  Interns will be involved in an experiential learning process which provides insight into elective politics, civic engagement, and the opportunity to observe first-hand the dynamics of legislative decision-making.  

    • Legislative Support:  Responsibilities may include research issues, tracking legislation, draft letters, resolutions, talking points, correspondence with constituents, lobbyists, and state agencies via phone, email, and meetings.

    • Constituent Services:  Responsibilities may include drafting letters, researching constituent concerns or requests, preparing material for monthly newsletters, and attending events in the community such as Neighborhood Board Meetings, parades, etc.

    • Office Support:  For those interested in continuing the internship through the end of the Session after May, intern responsibilities may include developing content for constituent communication, attending meetings and community events on behalf of the representative, filing, answering the phone, preparing mail, and welcoming the visitors.

  • HOW TO APPLY

    • Applicant Qualifications:  

      • Attending a four-year college or university in Hawaii

      • Junior or Senior status in good academic standing

      • Excellent writing and communication skills

      • Strong work ethic, impeccable reliability, and independent time management skills

      • Flexibility and positive attitude about working in a fast-paced environment

      • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills in working with both colleagues and the public

      • Office computer experience (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)

      • Basic research capabilities

      • Desire to learn

      • Interest in public service

      • Professional demeanor

      • Mature judgment and commitment to following all legislative ethics laws

      • Prior political experience or political science background is not necessary!
