The High School Internship Program are non-paid positions. 

Applicants must be in good academic standing to be considered.  The program provides the opportunity to:

  • Gain exposure to the State’s legislative process

  • Apply classroom knowledge

  • Develop additional skills

  • Create a network of contacts

  • GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • The combination of each intern’s expectations, interests, and assignment to the office produces a unique experience.  The High School Internship Program provides a rare opportunity to work with a state legislator in the House of Representatives.  Interns will be involved in an experiential learning process which provides insight into elective politics, civic engagement, and the opportunity to observe first-hand the dynamics of legislative decision-making.  Strong written and oral communication skills, a basic understanding of government and the legislative process are helpful.

  •  Legislative Support:  Responsibilities may include research issues and tracking legislation

  • Constituent Services:  Responsibilities may include drafting letters, researching constituent concerns or requests, preparing material for monthly newsletters, and attending events in the community such as Neighborhood Board Meetings, parades, etc.

  •  Office Support:  For those interested in continuing the internship through the end of the Session after May, intern responsibilities may include filing, answering the phone, preparing mail, and welcoming the visitors.

    • Excellent writing and communication skills

    • Junior or Senior status in good academic standing

    • Strong work ethic, impeccable reliability, and independent time management skills

    • Office computer experience (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)

    • Basic research capabilities

    • Desire to learn

    • Interest in public service

    • Professional demeanor
